Local Mayors Back SFO Noise Reduction

San Francisco International Airport is under pressure from a coalition of eight local mayors to take their complaints about jet noise seriously.
At a news conference at Palo Alto City Hall May 21, Mayor Gary Fazzino asked airport management to adopt a series of controls before the airport's USD$2.4 billion international terminal expansion is finished next year. He called for public hearings in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties as part of the approval process for new runways.
Mayors from Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, Atherton, Redwood City, Portola Valley, Woodside and Los Altos back the plan, which calls for reductions in noise from current jet flights, guidelines to ensure that new flights or larger aircraft do not exceed a designated noise level over Peninsula cities, and substantive penalties for noncompliance.
When the new terminal is complete, the number of flights at San Francisco International will increase, and larger jets are expected to increase the number of passengers. Airport officials say they also need to build new runways to reduce delays, improve safety and carry larger planes in the future.
